Paicines Ranch: Monitoring

Monitoring

Sound management is dependent on having relevant and accurate information. Monitoring at Paicines Ranch occurs at numerous levels. Planned grazing of livestock entails daily monitoring of plants and animals including the growth rate of plants, amount of forage taken at each grazing and indicators of livestock health. Croplands and rangeland are monitored by staff for soil health, biodiversity, mineral and water cycles, and energy flow. In addition, the ranch has partnered with the Point Blue Rangeland Monitoring Network which does extensive third party monitoring across the ranch including birds, plant and soils. Third party soil carbon monitoring has been ongoing at the ranch for several years through the Soil Carbon Coalition and we plan to begin working with Ecdisys to monitor insects as an additional indicator of diversity and an early indicator of change.
